Janine Merkl is an artist and graphic designer currently living and working in Vancouver, BC. She was born and raised on the prairies and spent her summers on her grandparents farm falling in love with nature. She earned a degree in Art History at the UofA with a focus in early modernism and followed up with a BDes from Emily Carr where she focused on photography and graphic design.

After many years working as a design lead and art director for global brands, she has shifted her energy into incorporating painting into her creative practise.

Her colourful and graphic work captures moments in time with meaningful objects, symbolism and story telling through florals, patterns, table tops and still lifes.

Her current body of work, White is Blue in the Dark, is inspired by spending time in darkness, both metaphorically and physically. These paintings are about beauty revealed in the dark—like fireworks, constellations, the colours you see when you close your eyes, being in love and flower gardens and boulevards during hot summer nights.
